I Agree with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer

Being the founder of the modern virtual organization management discipline, and probably the world's most ardent advocate of working in a virtual organization environment and related benefits, I know what I am about to say will shock the hell out of most, if not everybody, however, it needs to be said.

I recently read a Vator News article by Steven Loeb about Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's decision to cancel its remote workforce experiment. I totally agree with Marissa Mayer for telling remote employees to come back into the brick-and-mortar fold for one and only one reason: Only Virtual Organizations should have a virtual workforce, otherwise, the only result you will get out of a virtual workforce is Virtual Chaos. Yahoo is definitely NOT a "virtual organization" and Marissa recognizes that very fact, plain and simple. Nor are any of its business units, departments, groups, divisions or subsidiaries.

That is not to say that she cannot setup virtual organization business units, departments, groups, divisions or subsidiaries to accommodate a virtual workforce. It's just that it takes a significant amount of time and education to do it properly. Please note my emphasis on the word "organization" since there is a big difference between virtual and virtual organization. All this means is that, for now, it's not high up on her list of priorities, which is understandable.

Why is that, you might ask? That is because having a virtual workforce not only requires but also dictates that you have the right virtual organization infrastructure in place, just as a brick-and-mortar workforce dictates that you have the right brick-and-mortar infrastructure in place - the ones that we are all accustomed to. Mixing the two of them is a deadly combination which should be avoided at all costs. It's like mixing chemicals that are bound to explode when combined.

Understanding the difference between these two infrastructures and the need to keep them apart is something that 99.99% of corporate executives worldwide are completely oblivious to. Unfortunately, they seem to be clueless about the "virtual organization infrastructure" concept itself, let alone what its architecture should consist of. The same can also be said for understanding the difference between "virtual" and "virtual organization."

For most, gaining access to the internet, making use of virtual collaboration tools, and having a few internal corporate procedures in place for their remote workforce is thought of as having in place a virtual organization infrastructure. Some will even tell you that they consider their company a "virtual organization" since some of their employees work from home or it employs a remote workforce in certain locations.

However, that being said, there is no need to despair. The solutions for putting in place a virtual organization, a virtual organization infrastructure, virtual organization candidate assessment, certification and recruitment, and virtual organization management education are and have been made available by Virtual Organization Management Institute et al to every single organization anywhere in the world since 2007. Absent these solutions, it is wise to stay away from a virtual workforce.

Back in August 2007, I wrote a white paper titled "A Paradigm Shift: VISION for Making the Transition from Recruiter to Virtual Organization Recruiter and Virtual Organization Consultant." (Do not attempt to read it right away since it is very long and you might fall asleep and not have a chance to finish reading this post.)

In any case, back then, I never even imagined that I would one day return to my "executive search" roots in order to help implement my VISION of today's recruiters making such paradigm shift. After all, Virtual Organization Management Institute (VOMI), the educational institute I now chair, is strictly focused on the modern virtual organization management discipline I founded in 1997 and global virtual organization management education.

However, after waiting years on end for some recruitment entrepreneur to grab my advice and run away with it, I decided about three (3) months ago that it was time for me to do something about my vision and help bring it to fruition, hence the formation of Virtual Organization Recruiter.

In essence, Virtual Organization Recruiter's mission is strictly focused on the assessment and certification, and recruitment, of senior executives and mid-level professionals, military-intelligence-defense personnel, government officials and employees, and academics and faculty members worldwide who are able to adapt and thrive - and Lead - in a 100% virtual or virtual organization environment. In other words, no recruitment of strictly brick and mortar candidates.

In connection thereof, we had no choice but to undertake the grueling but exhilarating task of hiring brick and mortar recruiters as well as virtual recruiters and begin the rigorous process of turning them into Virtual Organization Recruiters, dedicated to fulfilling the mission of our new Virtual Organization Recruiter division.

Thus, fulfilling my prophecy of one day seeing recruiters and virtual recruiters making the paradigm shift from recruiters to virtual organization recruiters and virtual organization search consultants.

Overview

Seeking current and former high-level executives from academia or any human resource, business and technology consulting discipline worldwide; who are familiar with the reasoning behind sabbatical programs offered to corporate executives or researchers or academics by major corporations and educational institutions worldwide; who either currently lead a social media practice or major social network [group] and are seeking an opportunity to offer virtual organization-related services; who either have a great deal of passion or strong interest or fascination for virtual organizations and their inner workings; have a strong vision to partner with VOMI Virtual Organization Academy in order to offer our Virtual Organization Sabbatical Program to their current or potential clients; and who also wish to participate, albeit in a very limited fashion, as part of an elite team of Mentor-Partner Associates involved in coordinating the activities of the corporate executives, public policy executives, researchers and faculty members they have personally referred to the sabbatical program at VOMI Virtual Organization Academy. You will work in a 100% virtual organization environment from wherever in the world you are located. Please note this is a business partner (license) opportunity and is not a job or consulting and teaching position.

Responsibilities

As a Mentor-Partner Associate, you will evangelize, develop your own business development strategy, recruit and directly [coordinate] the activities of one or more members of the team of Industry Executives, Public Policy Executives, Researchers, Investors, and Faculty Members that you have personally referred into the VOMI Virtual Organization Academy Sabbatical Program - entirely subject to the discretion of the Mentor-Partner. Develop global high-level contacts and form alliances with key decision-makers and other stakeholders at leading corporations, governmental institutions, public policy entities, and educational institutions worldwide.

Will assist the Founder & Mentor-Partner of VOMI Virtual Organization Academy by coordinating the activities of one or more members of your team - to the extent that you are willing and capable of doing so - and, in the process, will gain a tremendous opportunity to learn on an as-you-go-along basis, right alongside your colleagues and directly from the founder of the modern virtual organization management discipline, the following: 1) the inner workings of life in a real 100% virtual organization environment and, 2) a basic foundation of the modern virtual organization management discipline .

You will have an opportunity to present at, as well as be involved in the development of, and participation in, various Virtual Organization Management webinars, seminars, workshops, symposiums and conferences to be held worldwide - if you have the time or inclination.

Qualification Requirements

Must have a high-level consulting, management, and strong business development background and currently own or lead an existing influential social media, marketing, or management consulting practice; or be a Social Media Guru and/or the owner of a large, high-level social network or social network group; or be a faculty member at a leading educational institution with organizational development or related teaching experience as well as extensive business development and consulting background; or be a venture capital executive with a leading investor group; or a semi- or fully retired VISIONARY executive from either the academic, business, government, defense, non-profit, military, legislative, judiciary, or public policy sector - who wants to get back into the game in an exciting way. Please do NOT apply if you do not meet the foregoing requirements. As well, we require all of the following:

Above all else, a Strong Business Development background - otherwise, please do not apply
Outstanding WORK ETHIC!
Prior compensation in excess of $400-500K is preferred but is not required
A passion or strong interest or fascination for all things Virtual Organizations is an Absolute Must
Willingness to learn how to operate in a 100% virtual organization
Ability to adapt and thrive in a 100% virtual organization
An extensive and impressive Circle of Influence in business, academia, and government
Sufficient time to coordinate the activities of one or more members of your team
Willingness to work as a Team Player and within the constraints of tight deadlines
Excellent written and oral communication, research, and writing skills
Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications and leading web-collaboration tools
Fluency in English required, additional language proficiencies (French, Chinese, etc.) are a big plus
Must be able to present in both small and large group settings in a virtual environment as well as in the Boardroom.
An MBA/Ph.D. is ideal, however, it is not required.

Renaissance of VOMI Social Network

Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to introduce some new social media features and services to all our loyal members and visitors. These new features and services are designed to give us all an opportunity, and the incentive, to be part of that change we seek to make in terms of how we view and use our social media platform.

This change will allow us to focus on the quality of our experience instead of the quantity of members in our group, and how that translates into something meaningful and concrete that truly allows all of us to leverage the tremendous power of social media to our individual and collective benefit.

In connection thereof, here are some global collaboration tools we will be using in order to make that process a seamless and enjoyable experience. However, as we all know, tools alone are not sufficient. It takes a good sense of common purpose, reasonable buy-in and motivation in order to get the job done. Therefore, the answer is really in your hands in terms of what you contribute, how you contribute, and the amount of time that you can contribute. Whether it's 5 minutes a day … 1 hour a day ... 1 hour a week … 1 hour a month ... just taking the time to say one good word about VOMI or any another social network or group … or just a referral to join our team, the choice is yours. Something is better than nothing and, after adding up all the little somethings, we would have made one big achievement that we can all point to and be proud of.
