My Response to Odesk CEO Gary Swart

My Response to Odesk CEO Gary Swart
Re: "Digital Nomads: A Work Freedom Revolution"

Gary, you are awesome!   I've been promoting this digital nomadic lifestyle over the past 17 years.  When my wife first heard me talk about it, she looked at me with a "very concerned look," wondering what world or planet I was living on and what kind of fever I was afflicted with.  My then teenage kids even called me "the nutty professor."

On the other hand, when I placed career ads for virtual positions (between 1997-2000),  I was overwhelmed by the enthusiastic responses that I received from the best of the best and the cream of the crop from around the world.

However, that being said, as the recruitment process evolved, I realized that the response I had received really had more to do with "curiosity" and "excitement" at this new possibility instead of a "buy-in" into this new concept.    As these executives became more and more aware of the environment they were going to be in, our  "virtual organization"--not "virtual"--infrastructure,  and an introduction to the basic tenets of the virtual organization management discipline,  they became so frightened to the point where it seemed as if I was asking them to jump off the roof of a 100-story building.

One individual told me,  "Pierre, this sounds exciting and I know I can be a tremendous asset to this organization because this is the direction that the world is headed in, HOWEVER, I don't dare go tell my wife that I am going to quit my lucrative job with a Fortune 500 company so I can go to work for a "virtual organization" that you're just starting.  She will think that I am insane!"

Well, 14-17 years later, I still do have executives coming out of the woodwork, however, this time around, the buy-in is there.   My wife no longer thinks that I am living in another world or on another planet, and she no longer detects any signs of a strange fever.   And most of all, my kids no longer think I am a nutty professor.

Thanks to you at Odesk, Elance and many others,  I am now considered normal.

However, that being said, I may have spoken just a little bit too soon.   Why is that, you might ask?   Well, after having been stuck with the "not normal" label for all these years, I've come to learn to accept and enjoy it, to the point where I recently decided that it was time for me to tell the entire world "My Vision of The New Virtual Organization World."  A world that I've been so passionate about and championing over the past 17 years.      A world made up of, as you've very well put it, "digital nomads" and "Virtual Organizations" living in peaceful coexistence with the "brick and mortar" world.

Keep up the good work!

My Response to "Who Is John Thompson?"

My Response to "Who Is John Thompson?"
by Pierre Coupet

For those of you who are not familiar with the name, John Thompson is the newly appointed Chairman of Microsoft.

So, here is my response to a CNNMoney article titled "Who Is John Thompson?":

Microsoft failed to understand what Google, Apple, Facebook, and LinkedIn understand--to some degree or another-- which is: we've been heading toward "The New Virtual Organization World" for quite some time now (over the past 10 years).

I have written  extensively on this subject over the past 10 years, however, Google seems to be the only organization which  subconsciously  or subliminally understands the paradigm shift that is slowly taking place--the evolution of social networks into virtual organizations.

Right now, the mantra of the day seems to be all about "capturing the mobile space, etc.," and who's doing what in terms of innovation, sales, and market share of tablets, smart phones, and now phablets, etc.; and the world has been anxiously waiting for Apple CEO Tim Cook to make an important announcement about the next  killer gadget innovation.

In the meantime,  no one is really paying attention to what Google has really been up to over the past several years.   With the tremendous amount of investment they have either already made or are now making in Google Apps--along with  the tight integration of  Google+, Google Blogger, Google Chrome, Google Chromebooks, Google Chromebox for Meetings, Google Glass, Google Fiber, Google Loon, and Google Chromecast  into Google Apps--they have been slowly, systematically, methodically, and quietly positioning themselves as--and are poised to be--the "de facto virtual organization platform" for these "virtual organizations" which will one day explode onto the scene and bring about the arrival of "The New Virtual Organization World";  a new era which will fundamentally transform the way we do business and, altogether, alter our way of life - for the better, of course.

This is such a brilliant and masterful pincer movement worthy the admiration and adulation of the most brilliant business and military strategists of all time.    As we speak,  they are quietly encircling the business, government, and education arenas (worldwide) and allowing and enticing them to advance into the "Google Orbit," preparing them for a final-stage booster launch into the atmosphere of The New Virtual Organization World.   All of  that is being done in broad daylight in front of everyone--a completely unsuspecting public--dressed up in perfect camouflage, all the while never once  mentioning the words "virtual organization"; and for good reason, I might add, since that would only confuse or befuddle the business intelligentsia  out there who wouldn't have a clue about all this "virtual organization" mumbo jumbo.

In all sincerity, I take my hat off to the Google Executive Leadership Team.    There is only one word to describe their strategy:  Genius

I have written a paper titled "My Vision of The New Virtual Organization World" :: It behooves John Thompson, Satya Nadella and the rest of the entire Microsoft executive leadership team to really pay attention to this document if they seriously intend to compete with Google and Apple and restore their former luster and glory.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that John Thompson and Satya Nadella can "grab the bull by the horns" and steer it in "The New Virtual Organization World" direction.    Satya's selection due to his understanding of the Cloud is a good step in the right direction, and John Thompson needs to be commended for that move.   However, that being said, do both John and Satya really see and understand the big picture?   They already have all the money and resources at their disposal - the only thing left that they need is "a vision of The New Virtual Organization World."

In the event that my message is not able to reach Microsoft, perhaps this is the sort of message that could only resonate with some up-and-coming, young entrepreneur (young gun) with a lot of fire in the belly and a lot to prove.

Best of luck John and Satya!

My Vision of The New Virtual Organization World: Global and Widespread Adoption of Virtual Organization Aptitude Assessment for All Personnel

My Vision of The New Virtual Organization World: Global and Widespread Adoption of Virtual Organization Aptitude Assessment for All Personnel

by Pierre Coupet

So what exactly is “The New Virtual Organization World™” and how does it differ from the “virtual world,” “virtual reality world,” and the “brick and mortar world”?

Well, the “virtual world” consists of all the applications, tools, services and technologies that are made available to us all from the internet. Whereas, the “virtual reality world” is a digital simulation of one or more aspects of our real “brick and mortar world” environment. And for those of you who may not be familiar with the “brick and mortar” term, the “brick and mortar world” is the real and physical world that we live in.

On the other hand, “The New Virtual Organization World" is a world that is primarily made up of “virtual organizations” that inhabit the “virtual world” and peacefully coexist with the “brick and mortar world.” These virtual organizations derive their resources from not only the virtual world and virtual reality world but also from the brick and mortar world.

So, prior to going any further, let me define a virtual organization. “A virtual organization is an organization which strictly consists of the following: a virtual workforce, a virtual workspace, and adherence to a strict adoption of the virtual organization management discipline (i.e., best practices, policies and procedures for operating and managing in a 100% virtual environment in accordance with the founder of the discipline).” Absent any one of these three criteria, an organization shall not be deemed to be a virtual organization.

Now that you have a very slight sense of The New Virtual Organization World, let me share with you my vision of this new world and how it will have a transformative effect on human evolution in the centuries and millennia to come.

Global and Widespread Adoption of Virtual Organization Aptitude Assessment for All Personnel
Whether you work for a mom-and-pop organization, one of the largest corporations in the world, a non-governmental organization (NGO) or major nonprofit organization, a governmental entity, or an educational institution, advances in virtualization technologies and social and collaborative tools and services are forcing all organizations to consider how to become more efficient and productive in a virtual environment.

However, as many human resource executives and hiring managers have already discovered, working in a virtual environment is fraught with a number of dangers and significant challenges and, therefore, is not suitable for everyone. The million-dollar question then becomes, “Besides using my gut feelings, flipping a coin, or giving someone a chance and seeing how things work out, how can I tell whether or not a person is suitable to work in a virtual environment and where can I get that answer?”

The answer lies in Virtual Organization Recruiter, the only such service provider in the world and a company which I chair. Virtual Organization Recruiter provides, among many other virtual organization assessment solutions, a formal, standardized Virtual Organization Aptitude Assessment solution for all employers worldwide. Henceforth, employers no longer have to take a shot in the dark, cross their fingers and hope for the best; play Russian roulette or guessing games; or utilize unreliable homegrown solutions from well-meaning employees that are tantamount to “having the blind leading the blind” or “in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.” For the most part, these homegrown solutions typically end up being an exercise in futility and throwing money down the drain.
